Wow.. Another Fireboy and Watergirl flash game is out, this time Fireboy and Watergirl 4: The Crystal Temple. You may have noticed I have never reviewed a Fireboy and Watergirl game even though it is a very popular flash game series and Oslo just put out the fourth game. This is actually just do to coincidence and partly because I'm fairly bad at these types of games so I tend to steer away from them. But I can't pass up reviewing or at least talking about such a popular flash game series and one that really is the pioneer and front runner of the duel character movement idea.
If you've played the other Fireboy and Watergirl flash games or a game like Pheus and Mor you know the basic concept in Fireboy and Watergirl 4. You control one character with the WASD keys and the other with the arrow keys. Likewise the puzzles get more difficult when you realize that Fireboy can't go into water and likewise Watergirl can't go into lava. Now, each edition of Fireboy and Watergirl (or each "temple") has had a central gimmick if you will. In Crystal Temple this gimmick is essentially portals which everyone should be familiar with from Portal and Portal 2.
The portal idea in Fireboy and Watergirl 4: The Crystal Temple works fairly well, actually really well due to the great level design that is typical of the Fireboy and Watergirl series. What is really interesting is a portal may have two sides so you need to go in one side, walk around the level to get to the other side to then be able to reach the goal. Also interesting is concepts introduced in past games/temples reappear in the Crystal Temple so the series is constantly being added onto. Overall even though this is the fourth addition of the Fireboy and Watergirl series, Fireboy and Watergirl 4: The Crystal Temple manages to stay fresh and ahead of the game while providing excellent thought provoking puzzles.
