One of my favorite flash game series has to be the Mass Mayhem series from Pyrozen. If you haven't played any (and note they are on their fifth edition) its basically exactly what the name says; mayhem. You run around killing people, causing destruction for points and completing missions. So when I saw on a site Mass Mayhem 5 Expansion although I first heard it referred to Mass Mayhem: Zombie Apocalypse Expansion I knew I had to play it and review it.
To be honest Mass Mayhem 5 Expansion is not what I was expecting and is a big detour from the gameplay of the core Mass Mayhem flash games. Where all the other Mass Mayhem games had missions and free roaming destruction, this Mass Mayhem 5 Expansion is more structured. The alternative title, Mass Mayhem: Zombie Apocalypse, is more relevant as it is a zombie survival game using the same graphics and engine that the Mass Mayhem series uses, which is fairly interesting. So the world is a lot smaller than you are used to in a Mass Mayhem game although your weapon choice and variety is the same and more.
So like anticipated once you know its a zombie survival game where you need to survive waves and waves of zombies, Mass Mayhem 5 Expansion shapes up quite well. You have your trusty shotgun at first but can buy a variety of handheld weapons to utilize and you also have a red corvette to drive and ram zombies and a mech suit to really cause some destruction. I would be lying if I said I didn't miss the inclusion of the missions as I feel that is what makes the Mass Mayhem series worthwhile and even to overlook some faults. Now that this Mass Mayhem 5 Expansion takes that away I feel I was able to step back and actually look at how flawed and glitchy the core mechanics engine really is (and honestly for all Pyrozen games really). I've noticed this a bit lately with the latest Feed Us games and some of their new releases but it is glaring in this Mass Mayhem 5 Expansion. So overall I think the idea of a zombie survival game using the familiarity of Mass Mayhem was an interesting detour for the series to take I personally would rather them focus on the mission style aspect of the series and really work out and test all their games more.
